An aggressive bandit today robbed two tellers at an Old Bridge bank, and even demanded more money than he was first handed from one of the workers.

At 2:10 p.m. a man entered the Chase Bank, 20 Bushnell Road, at 2:10 p.m., handed one teller a note stating “Give me the money,” then took cash and demanded the note back, said Capt. Arthur Carullo.

Then the robber went to a second teller’s booth, handed passed the note again, but when the teller turned over cash, the robber asked, “What about the hundreds,” Capt. Arthur Carullo said.

After receiving additional money, the bandit fled the bank and drove away in white sports utility vehicle with duck tape over the license plate, the captain said.

The robber was described at a Caucasian man, about 6-feet-2 inches tall, and wearing a black cap.

Police ask that anybody with information call Detective Glenn Smalley at (732) 721-5600, ext. 3141.

Credit Report Concerns

[ 0 ] April 9, 2012

barroodagency-allenlevineLending institutions have historically used credit reports as a determining factor for making loans to customers, and as a gauge for the interest rate to charge. Today, however, more people than ever are interested in your credit history. Many non-lenders are now using credit histories as a critical factor in the purchase of insurance. For example, a number of property insurers use credit history to help set rates for homeowners insurance.

The general feeling among some insurers is that someone under financial pressures might be tempted to have a loss of a “valuable asset” such as a home. With the hardening property insurance market, property underwriters indicate that use of this resource will increase. A much more controversial use of credit data is in writing and rating auto insurance.

A recent study shows how widespread this practice has become. The study found that 92% of the 100 largest personal automobile insurers use credit information to underwrite new business. Additionally, 52% of the companies indicated that credit reports were used to determine rates. At this point, auto insurer’s faith in credit reports remains a mystery. What’s clear is that the use of credit histories varies with each insurance company. Redefining Retirement

[ 0 ] April 4, 2012

barroodagency-allenlevineRetirement for many U.S. citizens has meant ending a working career, taking Social Securityand pension funds and settling down in Arizona or Florida. Unfortunately for most working people, there’s little hope they’ll see a retirement like that. Over the years, we have had to become more self-reliant when it comes to retirement. Employers have been phasing out traditional pension plans, and we’ve had to contribute to plans like the 401(k) and IRA.

So today, retirement funds come from the compilation of government, employer and personal savings. But even this is fading fast. Most people today realize their retirement years will be redefined by one additional source of funds – work. Given today’s longer life expectancy and frequent medical breakthroughs, many baby boomers feel that their current retirement programs can only finance 20 to 30 years of retirement. Many individuals will have to delay retirement or seek part-time work to supplement retirement income. While this redefined approach to retirement may mean working beyond what used to be considered a normal retirement age, it also can offer an opportunity to continue to grow and change well into your golden years.

Do We Hear Wedding Bells?!

[ 0 ] March 30, 2012

barroodagency-allenlevineCongratulations! You’re getting married! If you’re like many other couples going for the BIG wedding, you have a million details to go over, a thousand decisions to make, and only half the amount of time you need to get it all done.

Insurance coverage for wedding gifts is probably not high on your list. But even if you’re registered at Home Depot and Amazon instead of Tiffany & Co., those tools and DVDs aren’t inexpensive. The total value of what you receive might surprise you and your insurance policy.

So add all of your belongings together, add the gifts, and call us to be sure your policy has a limit that’s high enough to cover it all.

What if your partner has a homeowners or renters policy of his or her own? Once you are married, you need only one policy.  Which one to keep? If one of you is moving into the other’s current location, the current policy on that location is the obvious answer. But what if both of you are going to move out of your current places and into a new one? Or maybe you’re moving from an apartment and buying a home or condominium. Talk to us. We’ll be glad to tell you your options and help you make your best choice.

A nice side benefit of arranging the insurance inadvance of the wedding is that the policy covers your property, not just in your apartment but anywhere in the world! If, while you’re on the honeymoon, your luggage should be stolen as you stroll the streets of Paris, or destroyed in a hotel fire you accidentally started with all those candles around that heart-shaped tub in the Poconos, your insurance will help you replace your belongings.

Basic Business Protection

[ 0 ] March 28, 2012

barroodagency-allenlevineThe number and types of insurance coverage’s can confuse many business owners. A good package policy – a single policy that incorporates several basic insurance protections is a good starting place. Two basic coverages typically are included in a package policy.

  • Property – which offers coverage forbuildings and contents and may includecomprehensive coverage
  • General liability – which covers legal liability resulting from owning a business and protects you and your company if a third party suffers a bodily injury or property damage due to your work or products.

With these two coverage’s as the foundation, the package can be expanded to include other coverages tailored to your business, such as business income, boiler and machinery, and crime. Although no package will cover all business exposures (workers compensation is one type of insurance that usually must be written separately), it does conveniently offer business owners broad coverage in a single policy.  If you’d like to find out the advantages that our package policies offer your business, give Barrood Agency a call.

Hospital Billing Errors are More Common Than You Think

[ 0 ] March 26, 2012

barroodagency-allenlevineAfter a hospital stay, the last item on your mind is scrutinizing every line of tiny print on a hospital bill. The stress of the illness or injury, and the added financial stress of paying the bill, might distract you from giving your bill the attention it needs.

And that could end up costing you thousands of dollars. The Department of Health and Human Services estimated that in 2004, individuals in the U.S. paid $31.2 billion in erroneous charges.

According to Equifax, 90% of all hospital bills contain at least one error, if not more. In fact, this practice is so common that there are entire agencies specializing solely in hospital bill auditing.

You can prevent this from happening to you if you know where to look. At first glance, a hospital bill can be confusing. Medical jargon, coding rather than detailed listing, and abbreviations can make the bill even more difficult to understand. Coding refers to special codes hospitals assign to certain areas of billing, so that the code appears on the bill rather than the name of the service provided. Hospitals are now required to list each item individually on the bill, rather than listing a generic group of costs, so they sometimes assign special codes to individual services.

There are several areas of the bill that need to be scrutinized. One of the most important areas to examine is your personal information. Ensure that this is entirely correct, especially your social security number. Other items to analyze are:

  • Room and board charges. Be sure that if you stayed in a double occupancy room, you are charged for a double, not a single room. Also, if you were assigned to a single room because a double was not available, be sure you were not charged for a single.
  • Admission charges. If this is unreasonably high, you might want to examine further.
  • Medication and prescription charges. Be sure that you are not charged for drugs you were not given or that you declined.
  • Large groupings of lab work. Each test should be itemized on the bill.
  • Double billing. Make sure you were not charged twice for a procedure, test, or other treatment.
  • Erroneous charges. Be sure that you were not charged for tests that were not performed or that you declined. Also, ensure you were not charged for tests that were administered twice because they were performed incorrectly the first time.
  • Supplies charges. Make sure you are not charged individually for supplies used during a procedure. Such charges would be covered in the cost of the procedure.
  • Personal charges. Toothbrushes, combs, slippers, etc. are covered in the cost of the room, and you should not be charged separately for them.

By paying close attention to any medical-related billing, you can rest assured that you are not paying for expenses you did not incur while in the hospital.
