Is your boat Insured?

[ 0 ] December 7, 2011

Your boat is probably one of your most treasured and valuable possessions. Unfortunately, a boat can also be vulnerable – to accidents, storms, and theft. In addition to giving you peace of mind, boat insurance coverage provides protection for you, your passengers and your boat.

Boat insurance provides physical damage coverage to repair your boat if it’s accidentally damaged or destroyed by a covered peril such as collision, fire, theft, windstorm, lightning or vandalism. This coverage is broad, and provides coverage for the boat, including its machinery and auxiliary equipment, outboard motors, boat trailer and personal property.

The Most Common Optional Boat Insurance Coverage’s:-

  • Personal Property: Cell phones, cameras and even personal flotation devices are often considered personal property on a boat. If a boat owner wants coverage for any of these items and other personal property they will want to consider adding additional personal property coverage to their boat insurance policy.
  • Fishing Equipment: All boaters know that fishing equipment is expensive and personal. To make sure one’s fishing equipment is covered adequately a boat owner will want to add fishing equipment coverage.
  • Uninsured boater: Getting hit by a boater carries enough problems but the problems get even worse when the offending boater does not carry insurance
  • Replacement Cost Coverage: This coverage will give a boat owner the full replacement value of their boat if their boat becomes a covered total loss under their boat insurance policy. The usual time period to recover the full replacement cost amount is three years.

Because of the special risks involved with boating, our policies also provide compensation for medical expenses, if your passengers are injured in an accident that involves your vessel, and liability protection, in the event that you are sued. Contact Doherty, Duggan and Rouse Insurors today for more details about Boat Insurance.

Doherty duggan and rouse  Respiratory Safety

This safety issue is serious enough that OSHA developed many regulations about it. The types of chemicals, dust or other harmful substances that cause respiratory problems might vary from one work site to another. However, there are precautions that must be taken to avoid overexposure or accidental inhalation of a substance. OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.134 regulation details respiratory safety standards. Employers should always have a work site assessed by an occupational health specialist to determine the risk of exposure to harmful substances. In addition to this, contact a personal business insurance company to find out what their rules about harmful substance exposure are.

Doherty, Duggan And Rouse Insurors want to make sure you stay safe at your construction site.

Scaffold Hazard Prevention 101

[ 0 ] October 14, 2011

ddrins

When scaffolds are not erected or used properly, fall hazards can occur. About 2.3 million construction workers frequently work on scaffolds.

Here are some tips to help prevent scaffolding hazards and keep your construction sites safe:

  • Unstable objects, such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks or concrete blocks must not be used to support scaffolds or planks.Scaffold must not be erected, moved, dismantled or altered except under the supervision of a competent person.
  • Scaffold must be equipped with guardrails, midrails and toeboards.
  • Scaffold accessories such as braces, brackets, trusses, screw legs or ladders that are damaged or weakened from any cause must be immediately repaired or replaced.
  • Scaffold platforms must be tightly planked with scaffold plank grade material or equivalent.A “competent person” must inspect the scaffolding and, at designated intervals, reinspect it.
  • Rigging on suspension scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each shift and after any occurrence that could affect structural integrity to ensure that all connections are tight and that no damage to the rigging has occurred since its last use.
  • Synthetic and natural rope used in suspension scaffolding must be protected from heat-producing sources.
  • Employees must be instructed about the hazards of using diagonal braces as fall protection.
  • Scaffold can be accessed by using ladders and stairwells.
  • Scaffolds must be at least 10 feet from electric power lines at all times.
  • Keep scaffold sound, rigid and sufficient to carry its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load without settling or displacement. It    must be erected on solid footing.

An estimated 4,500 injuries and 50 fatalities happen each year!

How Many Instances of Cattle Theft Have You Heard of in Your State?

[ 0 ] October 7, 2011

ddrins

If you didn’t know what year it was, you’d think you were back in the Wild West. That’s because cattle rustling, once a thing of movies and nostalgia, has made a disturbing comeback. From Oregon to Texas and all across the Midwest, farm owners are having cattle stolen at an alarming rate.

One farmer in Oklahoma lost 30 specially-bred cattle in 90 days. Another farmer in Alabama lost two prize bulls overnight. In Texas alone, cattle rustling crimes have tripled since 2007, with 7,400 cattle being stolen in 2010 compared with 2,400 in 2007.

Protecting your cattle with Agri-business Insurance is a must in the world of agriculture as well as taking preventive measures. Here are a few tips to help keep your cattle safe:

- Take a daily headcount of all herds.

- Vary feed times; the less predictable you are, the less likely thieves can know exactly when to strike.

- Use videotaping in stockyards.

- Lock all gates at all times.

- Organize files and keep proof-of-ownership, receipts, etc. for all equipment and herds.

- Keep transport equipment out of sight and locked.

- Locate pens away from roads and access drives.

- Patrol fences, as much as three times a day, varying your schedule to avoid being predictable.

With over 55 years of experience you can trust Doherty, Duggan and Rouse to protect your cattle and all your Agri-business needs.

Business Protection and the Fair Labor Standards Act

[ 0 ] July 24, 2011

The federal Fair Labor Standards Act forbids an employer from firing a worker because he filed a complaint accusing the employer of violating the law.

It doesn’t say whether the employee’s complaint must be in writing. What if the worker complains verbally but never makes a written complaint? Does the FSLA’s prohibition against firing him still apply? That was the question the U.S. Supreme Court faced in a case it decided in March 2011.
